I was reading this in the New Statesman (UK) and blogger Kev Sherry seems to have become a Yes voter. But Sherry is an unlikely vote for independence:
I despise nationalism. I despise patriotism. I hate bagpipes, I hate kilts and tartan and I hate the cringe inducing shouts of “wha’s like us” in bars across the nation at closing time on drunken Saturday nights. I love the other countries we share this little island with. I am not what you could ever call a patriot or a nationalist and I would call myself European long before I’d ever call myself Scottish. I believe in cultural and ethnic integration. I believe in a world where nationalities blur into one another rather than divide on tribal lines. I have been, until fairly recently, a staunch ‘No’ voter. However, all things considered, I now feel I am left with no choice but to vote Yes in the forthcoming referendum.
I could not disagree more with Sherry. But this seems to give some support to my theory that Yes could win on September 18 due to a hidden vote for independence. Sherry argues independence means autonomy.
Independence offers us a chance to make a change, to take a leap of faith, to show our brothers and sisters in England and the world beyond that there is a better way of living and treating people.
I urge you not to play it safe and I urge you to think about more than your own pockets. I urge you to see something better in the people around you. I urge you to vote Yes.
I would say something somewhat similar to Sherry’s post. I disagree with the socialism and liberalism of the SNP. I think the Scottish people need a libertarian and spiritual revival. But maybe with independence, politics can have room for that sort of party and that the people can find their way again.
I was also intrigued by this ad from Better Together that I did not find particularly offensive (but I am not a woman) but many did – here’s from the Guardian (UK) – so many in fact that it may produce Yes voters. Here’s one:
Sandra Grieve, former convener of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, told the Guardian that the advert had finally convinced her to vote yes.
“It was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I was a very clear no,” said Grieve, who was a member of the Scottish Constitutional Convention which developed the framework for devolution, “but I’ve been increasingly uncomfortable with what I experience as a condescending smugness from Better Together.”
OOPS! So I’ll go out on a limb: That second debate was the turning point – when Darling said what Sandy said months ago that Scotland could use sterling without anyone’s permission. If there is condescension in this campaign, it is the idea about the currency (You can’t use the pound because we won’t let you!) and other threats from the UK leaders that terrible things will happen if Scotland goes independent. The yes will win and it may not be close. We’ll all find out September 18.
